Owning your own business comes with a lot of hats, I knowww
Even more so for a handmade artist. You have this amazing ability to create art that speaks volumes and you want to share it with others. So, you take the leap to open your own business.
Soon you begin to realize that you’ve suddenly taken on the roles of much more than just design, production and sales; the three most common perceptive tasks of a handmade artists business. While you’re making art, you start squeezing in duties of management across all fields; marketing, advertising creation, inventory & purchasing, accounting & financing, IT and the list goes on! Between all that, you’re going to be answering emails, photographing your products, building and publishing listing content, keeping up with social media and shipping orders on a daily basis.
This was an eye opening reality for me the first few years in business. I sat down with my face in my palms completely exhausted one night, which made me realize that the frenetic pace I was working at — needed to be streamlined in every way possible. After going through seasons of high volume sales and feeling overwhelmed once they hit, I decided to create some organization templates that would serve one big purpose — to get shit done more efficiently.
“What do you have on your clipboards?”
The number one thing I get asked when I post a photo of my work space on social media is “what do you have on your clipboards?” and “what are those papers hanging up behind your bench?”
Well, let me tell you — those papers are the key to me staying organized and sane throughout the year (especially the holidays) with the amount of work that comes out of this studio. Over the years of owning a handmade jewelry business, I’ve learned what to do and what not to do. Being unorganized is a huge NOT.
I’ve been using these templates to aid in production since 2016 and I can attest that they really do help with making operations run more smoothly across all aspects of business.
I made them for myself and I’m sharing them with you
I’ve revamped my templates one by one and tailored them for wider range of production; not just for me and what I do. These are here to give you a foundation in your business organization process and for you to see what works best for you. Use them how you wish.
To read more about each template, you can find them in my shop under the ‘Makers Templates‘ category.
